Patrick is the head instructor and curriculum designer for our Effects Technical Director (FX TD) Program. Keeping with the tradition of project based learning, he is designing a one of a kind curriculum to train tomorrows Effects Technical Directors. As well as spending time mentoring and instructing students, Patrick works closely with our Industry partners to keep his program relevant and world class.
Patrick has experience working in three of the top VFX markets US, UK, and Canada for more than 10 years and got more excited, but also more realistic about it with every year. His understanding of the dynamics of this industry grew as did his love for FX. The simulation and design of rule based systems, physics in a snowglobe, milk mixing into coffee…. is the most fascinating aspect of it all to him. He now holds the strong desire to pass on this fascination.
When looking at fostering people’s skills in FX, there is a lot more to know than the inner workings of Houdini. To mention just a few other fields of importance: A thorough understanding of production pipelines, the ins and outs of data structures, scripting, computer resource management, physics, maths… and certainly a love for observing natural phenomena and ponder their inner workings… all these things play into a successful career in FX and I certainly want to approach education in this field as broadly.

Patrick started out earning his Bachelor of Arts in Media Design, getting a broad education in classical print, multimedia and motion design. Immediately after graduating, he went on to study Animation & VFX at Filmakademie Baden-Wurttemberg.
Midway through the 4-year program Patrick took a sabbatical and moved to Los Angeles to work for then nascent Pixomondo LA. Patrick quickly became a core part of the team. In-between all of this, he moved to London for a year to marry the love of his life, Yasemin, working there in FX for Double Negative & Framestore.
