LEAD COMPOSITING INSTRUCTOR | MONTREAL

“It’s a privilege to serve students who have entrusted themselves to you and to ultimately create an atmosphere where they are free to reveal their own talents.”

Creativity and problem-solving have always gone hand in hand for me as an artist. As a native Montrealer, my passion for detail began during my education and early career in graphic arts. With the advent of advanced digital technology, I left design to pursue a career with high-end software developer Auto Desk and eventually returned to production when I was offered a position with Warner Bros. in Los Angeles, California where I worked on such milestone projects as Mars Attacks, Contact and Batman & Robin. From there, I moved on to different studios such as: Framestore, CIS: Hollywood and Digiscope, where I worked on other blockbuster films such as Armageddon, Dr. Doolittle, Mission Impossible, Spiderman, The Hunger Games and Oz: The Great and Powerful. 20 years and over 100 feature film credits later, I returned to Montreal to join MPC, first as a Senior Compositor, then as a Compositing Instructor and finally as Head of Learning and Development for Technicolor Canada. This allowed me to combine my knowledge of feature film work along with my passion for teaching.

As an instructor, I have trained artists for the fast- moving production environment of the visual effects industry. Because of my extensive production experience, I have been able to mentor artists on both a technical and artistic level as well as create course content. As Head of L&D, I oversaw the learning and development for five different departments across 4 business units.

In 2018, I decided to join the amazing team at Lost Boys Studios | Campus D’Effets Visuels in Montreal as a Lead Compositing Instructor. What I loved most about being a compositing artist is the creativity that’s involved in the task that’s been entrusted to me. I love everything about the process – from the research to the details and above all – the learning. As a teacher, I also love the learning process… and the research… and the details. But what I love most about being a teacher is the challenge involved in explaining and talking about the art of compositing. It’s a privilege to serve these students who have entrusted themselves to you and to ultimately create an atmosphere where they are free to reveal their own talents.

Today, I feel that I am truly lucky to be doing something that I love for a living. I feel that I’ve grown into what I do now… wholeheartedly. Along with teaching full time, I am also pursuing my Master’s Degree in Art as well as conducting lectures in High Schools, Colleges and Universities where I am involved in mentoring students.

Lost Boy's Advanced Visual Effects Compositing Program is the missing piece in Montreal's ever growing VFX industry. Fortunato has vast experience in feature film post production having worked and taught at MPC, one of the leading VFX houses in the world, and I trust he will be bringing his treasure of knowledge into this program.
